Lake Forest dentists are proud to offer this FDA-cleared device as part of our dental pain management program. This device is easy and comfortable to use and is available for use at our Lake Forest dental practice. And we can even prescribe an at-home version for patients to use on the go or while at home. Find out more about the Synapse Dental Pain Eraser and how it could be the right solution for you.
How does the Synapse Dental Pain Eraser work?
Using Advanced Pulsewave Technology™, the lightweight, handheld pen sends gentle electrical pulses to the nerves at the site of pain. The electrical pulses reach about 1 cm in depth and help reduce histamine production directly related to inflammation and pain. This medication-free pain reliever produces immediate results that may last up to 48 hours. It is easy to apply and safe for use on children as well.
The device is equipped with two tiny, metal round nodules at the end. You power on the device, and a blue light appears at the opposite end. Once the blue light begins flashing, it is ready to use. Gently rub the nodules at the pain site. You can use side to side, up and down, or circular motions. The Dental Pain Eraser is designed to ease hard or soft tissue pain. You can use the device for up to 10 minutes at a time in one spot without any side effects, although most users experience relief in as little as two minutes.
After each use, run the metal tips under light water, but avoid fully submerging it into water. You should disinfect the end of the device by applying 70% rubbing alcohol to a cotton swab and rubbing the metal nodules. Although the device is clean and ready for its next use, you should not share the device with anyone else, even family members.

What is the Synapse Dental Pain Eraser not used for?
Ideally, this device should be used to ease acute pain. It may also be used to help buy you a little time before getting in to see an emergency dentist in Lake Forest. However, you should always have a dentist assess your dental pain to ensure you receive proper treatment, if necessary.
The Synapse Dental Pain Eraser has many practical and at-home uses, but there are times when you shouldn’t rely on the pen for easing dental discomfort. For instance, don’t rely on the pen to ease dental pain that reoccurs, like with a toothache, because it may require professional dental treatments to prevent the condition from worsening. Additionally, don’t rely on the Dental Pain Eraser to ease discomfort from ulcers or oral sores that do not appear to heal or are worsening. The purpose of the at-home device is to ease acute or intermittent pain, although you should still see a dentist about your condition.
How do dentists use the Synapse Dental Pain Eraser?
If you are an individual that experiences heightened tooth sensitivity during your dental cleanings or other treatments that typically do not involve the need for an anesthetic, we may recommend the Synapse Dental Pain Eraser right before your procedure. We may also apply the Dental Pain Eraser before professional teeth whitening treatments or other treatments that may cause mild tooth or gum discomfort. It may even help make receiving anesthetic injections easier for some patients. However, the Dental Pain Eraser does not take the place of the anesthetic that may be required for certain procedures but, instead, may be used in combination with numbing medication.
Who should not use the Synapse Dental Pain Eraser?
This device is safe for most healthy individuals. However, additional testing is needed for certain health conditions. Therefore, please avoid using the Synapse Dental Pain Eraser if you:
- Are pregnant
- Experience seizures
- Have a pacemaker
