Lake Forest, Lake Bluff, and Lincolnshire IL
Dental offices are continually working around spray droplets, which is why Lake Forest Smiles makes the health and safety of our patients and employees a priority. Even before COVID-19, and still today, we donned face masks, eye shields, and gloves during every procedure. We have always enforced proper disinfecting protocols between each patient. But COVID-19 has proven to be different than other pathogens we’ve seen before since it easily spreads through air droplets. Lake Forest Smiles is excited to offer CloSYS, an oral mouth rinse proven to reduce COVID-19 virus up to 98.4% when swished in the mouth for at least 30 seconds. Today on the blog, learn more about this mouth rinse and why we chose to offer it to our patients.
What is CloSYS Mouth Rinse?
CloSYS is an antimicrobial mouth rinse that reduces the saliva’s viral load, which could decrease the risk of transmitting COVID-19. The solution is alcohol-free, Triclosan-free, sulfate-free, gluten-free, and contains no dyes. Its proprietary formula contains an ingredient called ClorastainÒ, which is a trade name for stabilized chlorine dioxide. This long-standing, safe, and effective oxidant has antimicrobial, disinfecting, and sanitizing properties. Acids in your saliva naturally activate the formula. ClorastainÒ kills microbial pathogens responsible for causing cavities, and gum disease, as it penetrates the oral biofilm naturally found in our mouths.
It is available in three varieties that all don the ADA’s seal of approval, and provide additional benefits:
- Ultra-Sensitive line is unflavored and ideal for those dealing with sensitive teeth, gums, or mouth sores.
- Silver Multi-Benefit Rinse in gentle mint flavor is aimed at those 55 years of age and up. Its balanced pH formula is ideal for helping deal with dry mouth. This fluoridated-infused mouthwash also helps strengthen enamel, reducing the risk of cavities. It eliminates bad breath with its non-irritating formula.
- Sensitive Rinse formula offers the same benefits as the ultra-sensitive, just with an added mint flavor to improve bad breath.
The Study
The study took place in Scottsdale, Az., by Rowpar Pharmaceuticals Inc., the makers of the CloSYS brand oral care line. The tests were performed at a highly acclaimed, independent laboratory in Kansas City, MRIGlobal, accredited to test highly infectious viruses such as SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Similar results were also found from a second study conducted by Microbac Laboratories, Inc., in Sterling, Va. Both studies concluded that CloySIS ultra-sensitive oral rinse significantly reduces COVID-19 within 30 seconds in the mouth, without the use of harmful, irritating chemicals such as povidone-iodine, alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide.
Jim Ratcliff, the CEO of Rowpar Pharmaceuticals, stated that “These are exciting and potentially groundbreaking findings.” While further studies conducted at the University of California San Francisco are still in the works to determine if reducing viral load actually helps reduce the spread of COVID-19 from person to person, initial studies made it clear that CloSYS mouth rinse does, in fact, reduce viral load. This is a groundbreaking discovery in the potential to minimize COVID-19 transmission.
CloSYS is available at major retailers such as Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and Amazon.
To help reduce oral viral load, we offer CloSYS mouth rinse to every patient before treatment. This not only keeps us safe but also reduces the potential for viral aerosols to circulate within our office. Not using CloSYS mouth rinse does not mean that it is unsafe to go to the dentist. Additionally, skipping routine or necessary dental appointments could put your health at risk of other potential diseases and oral concerns. Lake Forest Smiles continues taking necessary precautions, as well as following the CDC’s guidelines for reducing the spread of COVID-19.
